The National Oceanography Centre Southampton reports successful deployments of their VMP-5500 profiler during the SOFINE expedition.  The  52-day expedition at the Kerguelen Plateau, in the southern Indian Ocean, focuses on a major Antarctic Counter Current meander. A variety of measurements are planned to further the understanding of the Southern Ocean circulation.VMP-5500 at Southern Ocean Fine Structure Experiment

Alberto Naveirra (NOC) and Kurt Polzin (WHOI) are contributing deep ocean turbulence microstructure and meso-scale current shear measurements with the VMP-5500. This particular instrument has just recently been in our shop to be fitted with a Sanford-style geomagnetic current meter, which provides information about the meso-scale currents using the Earth's magnetic field.
